Aim:

Students will acquire knowledge, attitude and skills on basic haematological procedures followed in haematology laboratory. Based on the knowledge on reference ranges and biological variations student will be able to evaluate the results of the analysis, interpret the results, identify the possible errors and its sources, and solve the problems.

 

Objectives:

At the end of the course the students should be able to

  • Understand the normal haemopoiesis
  • Describe standard procedures for collection and handling of blood specimen in haematological analysis
  • Define the reference ranges of haematological values for healthy individuals and the physiological   variations
  • Perform the basic haematological techniques by manual methods
  • Understand the principles of automated blood count techniques
  • Perform basic haematological tests on automated haematology analyzers and calibrate them
  • Prepare and stain blood and bone marrow films
  • Examine the blood films for parasites
  • Understand the morphological classification of anaemia
  • Understand the basic quality assurance programme in haematology laboratory
